You've heard one neighbor's story about Charlie Johnson. Here's another......
On March 21, 2007, Honey Girl was rescued from the same fate so many others met at Charlie Johnson's property, also known as "Dead Acres". The neighbors who adopted her think Johnson's punishment should be the same as how he treats his animals - held captive, fed prison slop, and neglected.
Anyway, it was a regular occurrence for the herd at Charlie Johnson's to head for the east side of the property to lean over, and sometimes jump over, or simply knock down, the neighbor's fences. On any given day you could see from two or three, to a dozen animals in one yard or another. No one blamed the horses for going through the fences, they knew the horses were starving. But they all blame Charlie Johnson for the gross neglect and abuse of these animals.
Every day you would also see several of them hanging around in the shady trees behind another neighbor. There they would lean over the fence to get to the grass on the other side. One horse found a friend in that yard, and soon found a new home there. That horse is Honey Girl. I am that neighbor.
In these pictures you can see the condition she was in when she was adopted. You will see her wonderful progress in just 4 months. All she needed was some much needed love and care, and lots of feed and hay.
Since then we've taken on two more. One, a 22 year old mare that the owners could no longer afford to keep, and a 19 year old mare. She lost a couple foals recently and was no longer profitable for the owners. Rather than take her to auction and risk a slaughterhouse, they asked if I would take her. It's been over a year since we got them and all three girls are doing just fine. I'll be adding their photos in the future.
Three Horse Tales
Remember all countless horses, mules and donkeys who have died over the last ten years as a result of Charlie Johnson's cold-hearted attitude towards these living creatures. To him they are simply merchandise to be bought and sold. It seems that anything that doesn't make him a profit gets thrown away...... Yet, he still claims that he was rescuing them from a worse fate. He claims that he gave them a better life than they had before. What makes it worse is that he has people believing him. They think we're being too hard on him. On one newscast he said that he fed all of them regularly. I suppose you could say that he did, if you believe prison slop is horse feed.
Remember Shadow.
If you've watched the news clips already, then you know what Roanie has to endure. If you haven's seen the clips yet, be sure to view the news videos above.
Roanie is one of the horses that were confiscated from Charlie Johnson. His condition was bad. Among other things, Roanie had non-stop dripping diarrhea which was eating away at his back legs. With proper medical care and plenty to eat, we're happy to say that he is healing, and is feeling much better.

There you have it. These are the horses that got this all started. I'm rather partial to Honey Girl. She has been a delight from the first moment and my inspiration to help others.
At any given time there would be 30-50 head hanging around in the northeast corner of the Johnson property. But, Shadow was Honey Girl's buddy, wherever she was, he was not far. He never did come close, he usually stood behind bushes and trees, waiting for us to leave before he'd come out. Even though we'd put hay and grass clippings over the fence, it was not enough to keep him alive, as they were all starving.
Shadow was in the same condition as Honey Girl when she was adopted. Just a month later, this is what he looked like. I was able to get so many photos of him because, I believe, he knew it was his time to go and he came back to say goodbye. We never saw him again after the last set of photos were taken.
*WARNING*
These photos are heartbreaking.
